Saints sign Manti Teo to two-year deal

Middle linebacker Manti Teo started his career with the Los Angeles Chargers.  As a rookie, he was coached by Mike Nolan, the new Saints linebackers coach.  So both Teo and Nolan will have familiarity with Teo’s skill set.

Teo will join linebacker A. J. Klein who the Saints also signed in free agency.  Klein signed a three-year, $15 million deal on the first day of free agency.  Both will join last year’s starting middle linebacker Craig Robertson, who led the team with 115 tackles.

The Saints have mostly relied on veterans at the linebacker spot (Jon Vilma and Scott Fujita are examples). And adding depth to this unit will assist in keeping players fresh.  Teo is not without an injury history.  In 2016, Te’o suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Week 3 against the Colts. He has missed 26 games in his NFL career.

Teo comes with experience, an ability to read and react well (smart player) but may tackle a little too high with poor angles.
