Nov. 11, 2012, Bank of America Stadium Denver 36, Carolina 14
John Fox, former Panthers head coach, visited Bank of America Stadium with Peyton Manning as his quarterback. Ron Rivera was in his second year as Panthers head coach with his second year quarterback Cam Newton. This was Fox’s first game against his former team, and the Broncos made it memorable. Manning threw for 301 yards and a TD — his 420th to tie him with Dan Marino for second on the all-time list — and the win also tied him with Marino with 147 (3rd most). Von Miller (who was drafted second behind Newton in the 2011 draft) finished with a sack, a forced fumble and four tackles for a loss.
I re-watched this game to get a feel for Super Bowl 50 and had forgotten what a miserable game Cam Newton had against the Denver defense. The last touchdown series by Carolina were sheer mercy points. Newton was harassed all day long and had six sacks. The team had at least seven three and outs. If ever there was a game to set the stage for revenge, this was it.
