As expected Dennis Allen, the interim defensive coordinator, has been named to the job permanently.  Dennis Allen’s calm demeanor and experience with the Saints personnel and concepts were probably the deciding factor.  The continuity is excepted to accrue to the Saints favor as Allen begins to implement his schemes.  There is no need for him to assess personnel either by talent or personality because of his familiarity, and there is no need to find out how well he will fit with Sean Payton or the organization.

This does not mean there will not be changes in personnel and certainly a new secondary coach will need to be found as Wesley McGriff has left the Saints for Auburn. When Dennis Allen was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, the defense ranked 23rd in the league but ranked 5th in sacks.  This would certainly be a welcome change for the Saints if the right personnel are on the roster and can be placed in a position to succeed.  Once Allen was named the interim defensive coordinator at the end of the season, it should be noted the Saints had several take aways.  Allen, as the secondary coach during the Saints Super Bowl season, saw many take aways during this season and was ranked 3rd in the NFL.

It is anticipated Allen will provide good input into the selection of defensive backs as well as other defensive personnel.
