Peter Giunta has been hired by the New Orleans Saints as a Senior Defensive Assistant. Giunta served as defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and head coach Tom Coughlin for the New York Giants from 2006 to 2014. He was fired by Coach Coughlin. Giunta has also served as defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams from 1998–2000, succeeding the retiring Bud Carson.
Giunta has coached at the high school, college and pro level, and also as both offensive and defensive assistant throughout his career. He played cornerback and running back under Robert Lyons at Northeastern University from 1974-1977.
Here is the video of Coach Giunta working with the defensive backs at the 2014 NFL Combine.
Peter Giunta is considered a defensive backs specialist. When Coughlin fired Perry Fewell and Giunta, he explained
“I have tremendous, tremendous respect for both Perry Fewell and Peter Giunta,” Coughlin said during an interview on WFAN with Mike Francesa. “I just felt like change was necessary there. They are both outstanding coaches, outstanding men. It didn’t work the way we wanted it to work and the change was made.”
It is noted Fewell was succeeded by Steve Spagnuolo who was fired by Sean Payton in 2013. Giunta had been with the Giants since 2006 and was a part of the Super Bowl wins in 2008 and ’12. His secondary was expected to be a strength of the team, but it was hit by injuries.
“I just think it is an opportunity for us, to a certain extent, to stimulate our defensive team due to the fact that you will end up with a new coordinator,” Coughlin said. “Those people will bring a new system, a new focus and a new area of concentration
The Saints have also added Aaron Glenn as a new coach in the secondary. We first wrote:
Glenn’s coaching career is an unusual one. In 2012, he was the general manager of the Houston Stallions of the indoor Texas Lone Star Football league. He then became a scout for the Jets and was eventually hired as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns. It is assumed he will be under the tutelage of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen whose expertise lies in the secondary.
But now we believe Glenn will be developed behind Giunta which frees Dennis Allen to be a full time coordinator should he be named to the position.
Peter Giunta would help Saints secondary along w/ A. Glenn—has done good job w/ secondary over years—I went against him in a Super Bowl.
