Luke McCown showed up on the injury report last week, and no one took much stock in the report because how could a back up quarterback who had not seen any live action since the Panthers game be very injured.  But apparently McCown was more injured than anyone thought.  Sean Payton announced today the Saints have signed Matt Flynn as the new back up quarterback and have placed Luke McCown on injured reserve.

McCown, a fan favorite, was a truly pleasant surprise as he led the Saints to an almost upset victory over the now 8-0 Panthers.

Matt Flynn won the 2007 BCS National Championship in the SupdOMe playing quarterback for LSU.  Flynn completed 19 of 27 passes and 4 TDs, and was named offensive MVP of the game. The Tigers finished the season ranked an undisputed #1 in the polls.

In the 2005 SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell was injured and Flynn finished the game. He was then given the nod to start for the Tigers in the 2005 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against the University of Miami Hurricanes. In that game, he led the Tigers to a 40-3 rout of Miami.

Flynn was signed by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2008 draft.  As a Packer, Flynn started the final game of the 2011 season against the Detroit Lions. He threw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 45-41 victory, both of which set single-game Green Bay Packers records.

He then signed with the Seattle Seahawks, expecting to compete with Tavaris Jackson for the starting job but both he and Jackson lost out to Russell Wilson.  Next, Flynn saw stints with the Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills before being re-signed by the Packers.  After his time with the Packers, he then played for the Patriots and the New York Jets before being signed by the Saints today.

The Black and Gold welcome Matt Flynn back to the familiar and warm environs of the Mercedes Benz SuperdOMe.
