Amidst all of the fan fare of Drew Brees returning to form, Mark Ingram running well, Khiry Robinson’s injury, as well as Brandon Browner’s flags, the signing of Mike Mohamed has gone somewhat unnoticed.  His signing was even somewhat eclipsed with the return of JoLonn Dunbar.

Mike Mohamed’s last year was spent with the Houston Texans where he registered 68 tackles and was known for his coverage skills.  Pro football Focus ranked him 19th as an inside linebacker with his highest ranking on pass coverage.  Mohamed is 6’3″, 238, with four years of experience.

Michael Renner of Profootball Focus went so far as to dub Mike Mohamed as a secret superstar of the Texans.

When released by the Texans in 2015 due to a calf injury, Mohamed was upset and pushed for and got an injury settlement on October 6, 2015. The injury settlement allowed him to sign with another team in three weeks.  Mohamed previously said he wanted an injury settlement rather than spend the remainder of the season on injured reserve. “I want to play this season,” Mohamed said. “It won’t be here, but I want to play somewhere and get back on the field. I’m almost back from the injury, so it’s kind of frustrating to go on injured reserve, but I understand that they didn’t feel like they could wait.”

In early November after his workout with the Saints, he was signed.  Sean Payton had this to say about Mohamed “He is smart (and) he is tough,” Payton said. “There were a lot of things that we liked about the player and now we have the opportunity to see him here practicing.”  Another great connection for Mohamed and the Saints–he played college ball with Cameron Jordan for four seasons.  “He seems like he’s pretty much the same guy,” Mohamed said of Jordan. “He’s definitely somebody I can turn to if I need any guidance.”

Given Jeff Ireland’s apparently keen eye for linebackers (witness the signing of Ellerbe, Anthony and Kikaha), I would expect this to be a good, fortuitous signing that will pay dividends for the years to come. We wish Mr. Mohamed every bit of luck on the field this year for the Black and Gold but especially when we play the Texans.
