Night and day are the 1st words that come to mind. Yes, I know it’s just the second game of the pre-season but what I was looking for before the game was improvement across the board – mission accomplished.
A few random thoughts on the game.
I thought Kevin Williams and Hau’oli Kikaha looked really good tonight. Williams was disruptive on the interior and Kikaha was disruptive on the edge. You can talk all you want about a high motor but Kikaha has great technique that wins every time. It’s especially pleasing to see Williams getting that push seeing how depleted on the defensive line the Saints are. He will be a key on this defense going forward.
Drew Brees, what can you say? he was flawless.
Brandin Cooks, this guy looks so smooth that it almost looks like he’s running at 80% while leaving defensive backs in his dust. His route running is noticeably more crisp with getting in; and out of his breaks, the sky is the limit for this young player.
Josh Hill got a ton of work tonight as did corner back Kyle Wilson. I liked Wilson’s aggressiveness to the ball. Yes, he got flagged but he had a solid outing overall. Speaking of Hill I loved his blocking work tonight – even with the second and third team, he was bringing it.
Brandon Coleman dropped a pass from Brees in the end zone; I wouldn’t look too much into this but instead look at his route and the height that Brees placed that throw–this cannot be understated enough.
Marcus Murphy–while he didn’t break one tonight–I liked his decisive move to the holes (special teams) he wasn’t hesitant at all. It’s a shame Jalen Saunders didn’t get the same opportunity….there is always next week though.
It looks to me like Luke McCown has lost his spot on this roster and Ryan Griffin has solidified his spot behind Drew Brees. Rookie Garrett Grayson showed some good things but also looked like a rookie throwing into a crowd in the end zone and misfiring on a pass to Willie Snead over the middle that was almost picked off.
No injuries tonight really made me smile.
Drew Brees 159 yards Tom Brady – 13. I almost laughed while I typed this, okay I did.
Whelp these are just a few quick thought on tonight’s game, I will have a more in depth look coming up in the coming days…until then, WHODAT!
