Team Building, Competing and Paddle Boarding with Drew Brees
Some of the New Orleans Saints players are hanging out with Drew Brees this week in San Diego in preparation for the season. Joining Brees are Brandin Cooks, Nick Toon, Seantavius Jones, Austin Johnson, Ryan Griffin, and former team mate Chase Daniel.
The day was organized by Brees who lives in San Diego during the off-season. For Drew Brees, it’s about off-field bonding with his teammates along with sharing a sport that he finds athletic and peaceful. Brees says “It will make the most athletic people feel pretty stupid! Anytime you are having to just balance on the water, it’s a different animal.” “They got the hang of it pretty quick but then it becomes who can stay on the longest? Who can race to a buoy the fastest? Who can knock each other off just messing around, having fun?” “I’ve fallen in love with it. Out here in San Diego, I’ve been out here plenty of times and seen dolphins, I’ve seen seals,” Brees said. “I haven’t seen any sharks though. I’m not sure I want to roll up on a great white!”
Immediately after shakily mounting the board on hands and knees, these six novices and professional athletes start capsizing and soon realizing stand up paddle boarding is tougher than it looks.
Saints receiver Seantavius Jones said ”It’s not easy at all, probably one of the hardest things I’ve done!” Jones, who fell off during his initial boarding, was upended by his team mates. Jones added, “Trying to knock people off the board? That’s not cool. I’m from Atlanta. I’m not used to doing stuff like this, it’s not cool!”
It is fully anticipated this team bonding will include some route running and pass catching as well as timing drills. Way to geaux, guys.
