First off let me apologize, I had a malfunction with my camera and didn’t know it until I got home so tomorrow I will be able to bring you a slide show.

Okay Mini camp got underway with the regular routine with the walk through’s and stretching that took about 45 minutes to complete. Below is a few observations from today (It’s a job within itself to decipher my scribblings)

Saints Mini Camp

  • Davis Tull did not participate in drills but was doing individual work with a trainer
  • Marques Colston did not practice either but was on the field talking with the recievers
  • Cook shows off his speed on a reverse and is not touched while he gets the corner
  • Hau’oli Kikaha was getting a lot of work with the 2nd team
  • Dustin Hopkins looked very good and seems to have a stronger leg than Zach Hocker
  • Keenan Lewis dropped an easy pick in 7 on 7
  • A beautiful pass down the seam from Brees to Benjamin Watson that would have went for about 35 – 40 yards
  • Seantavious Jones with a good route to beat Stephone Anthony on an out route
  • Nick Toon makes a great catch on a long pass down the sideline with PJ Williams in coverage (it was tight coverage – just a perfect pass from Brees)
  • Brandin Cooks shows great concentration bobbling a medium range pass over the middle and makes the snag pulling away from the defender – the crowd erupts
  • Garrett Grayson with a blown play throwing to nobody over the short middle (Might not have been his fault)
  • Jairus Byrd with a hustle strip – ball hawking
  • Interesting (not really) the Saints are splitting Josh Hill wide like they did with Jimmy Graham
  • Tim Hightower looks like he is showing no Ill effects of his lingering knee issues – his cuts are sharp and has good acceleration
  • Play of the day –  RJ Harris with the long bomb finger tip snag – crowd roars in approval, Luke McCown runs down to give him a good congrats
  • SJB getting a little advice from Payton on his coverages
  • SJB not long after makes a beautiful leaping deflection on a deep ball down the sidelines
  • Max Unger with a bad snap to Brees that gets behind him
  • Brandin Cooks once again shows his speed but so does CJ Spiller – both of these players is noticeable on how fast they get to the edge
  • Nice back shoulder throw and catch by Willie Snead and Ryan Griffin
  • Mike Golic is working with the 3rd team (center)
  • Jairus Byrd, Jalen Saunders, CJ Spiller, Brandin Cooks, RJ Harris and Marcus Murphy getting work returning punts
  • Ronald Powell showing some nice speed of the edge with some good pressure
  • Terrance Frederick with a deflected interception

Overall it was a good practice considering they are in shorts – it was well paced and it seemed the players really welcomed playing for the home crowd. Speaking of, I’ve been to plenty Mini Camps and this had to be the biggest crowd I’ve seen beside the year after the Saints won the Superbowl.

I will be back out tomorrow and hopefully my camera issues are resolved, I will also have another bullet point report – so until then…..WHO DAT!
