After this morning’s news that Joe Morgan has been lost for the season with a knee injury, it seems the Saints could use more options at wide receiver again. One possible option that could come rather cheap is an old familiar name: Robert Meachem. Yes, Meachem is still under contract with San Diego, but if they can find any way possible to move him they will. It’s been made very clear that the new regime in San Diego has no interest in keeping Meachem around as a #5 receiver with a $5M salary but they also can’t cut him due to the $10.625M dead money hit they would take as a result. So far unable to find a trade partner, they would likely be willing to accept nearly any offer simply to get him off of their books. At this point, New Orleans could probably bring Meachem back to the Big Easy for a 7th rounder in 2015 (Experts expect the 2014 draft to be loaded; don’t want to give those picks away). They would just need to make sure they include the condition that he rework his contract as part of the deal. It would give Drew Brees a deep threat that he already has chemistry with and Meachem certainly knows the offense already. He could be ready to go walking in the door.
So what do you think? Would you give up the 2015 seventh rounder for Meachem? If not, what would you be willing to trade?
