Training camp 2013 day five is in the books. The dog days of camp are here folks and I’m not talking about the players, I’m talking about me. As KTDL pointed out, I’m as red as a tomato. Seriously though, I’m sure the players are feeling it tenfold and are trying to fight through “camp legs”. Whenever you sit through these practices it gives you a renewed respect on just how good of shape these players are in. As the fatigue sets in you do tend to see a little sloppiness here and there but all things considered I think they are handling it well.
The list of the walking wounded is getting a little longer with Tom Johnson and Curtis Lofton joining Patrick Robinson, Martez Wilson, and Ray Shipman. Marques Colston was also still out but was working with a trainer testing his foot so I expect he will be back soon. A new addition was added but should be back in no time, Jonathan Vilma busted his nose in a collision with Mark Ingram early on in practice, his nose had to be stitched up but he should be fine.
After the walk through and stretch, they did the usual positional drills. I’m sure you don’t want to read about that boring stuff so we’ll skip it and get right to the drills.
7 on 7: Mark Ingram with a catch over the middle and still showing that burst that he had early on in camp. I got a chuckle when with no pass rush, Brees tucked the ball away and ran because the coverage was too good, it was probably his football clock going off inside his head. This next one may have been the play of the day, Jimmy Graham caught an over the shoulder deep seam pass with Kenny Vacarro draped all over him, and when they both hit the ground, Vacarro came away with the ball. It would have been ruled a dead play and Jimmy let the rookie know it was a completion. Ramon Humber knocks down a pass intended for Chris Givens. Saalim Hakim catches a sideline pass as AJ Davis hits him just as the ball arrived, he held on to it, nice job. Courtney Roby freezes Rod Sweeting on a 15 yard out pattern. Again good coverage by the DB’s as Seneca Wallace can’t find anybody open and has to tuck and run. The 7 on 7 drills come to a close with Corey White getting a pick on pass that was off the receiver’s hands.
11 on 11 team drills: The drills start off with Brees delivering a dart to Kenny Stills on a medium out pattern, Malcolm Jenkins was covering. Brees to Lance Moore with a sideline pass over Keenan Lewis. With Cam Jordan applying pressure Brees fits one in to Andy Tanner into double coverage. DE Jay Richardson had a good day as I seen him apply pressure a few times. Akiem Hicks with what would have been a sack, he’s been solid. UDFA DE Glenn Foster got manned up and locked down on a play that sprung Travaris Cadet; it would have been a long gain. Rufus Johnson with good pressure on Luke McCown probably would have been a sack. Terron Armstead with a missed block on a swing pass.
I have to say, the more I watch Vacarro, the more I like him, he’s nasty and plays with an attitude.
Darren Sproles is showing some moves making people miss on a swing pass that would have been a nice gain. Chase Thomas is seeing some time rotating in with the first unit. Jimmy Graham had Kenny Vacarro beat on a long sideline pass but dropped the ball, it wouldn’t have been the easiest catch but he should have made it. In a bit of a mismatch, Chris Givens easily beats Will Herring on an out pattern. AJ Davis continues to mix it up with a nice pass break up. Jason Smith with blatant holding on LB Eric Martin, that was too obvious. Preston Parker with a one handed catch and was able to keep both feet inbounds. The big man Tyrunn Walker collapsing the pocket to force a throw. New safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah with a sack to close the 11 on 11 drills.
Some more special team drills as coach Payton watches very closely to the gunner drills; afterwards he gives a little speech (looks like he’s just stressing the importance of it) to them as the drill ends.
The Saints go into a time running out drill where the offense runs a play and then the kicking unit runs onto the field to kick a field goal.
Just when you thought things were winding down, more 11 on 11 drills.
AJ Davis over the back of Joseph Morgan in what is an obvious pass interference call. Nick Toon scores a long TD down the sideline because AJ Davis fell down in coverage. Chris Chamberlain blows up a run play in the back field. Saalim Hakim shows good hands as he takes in a pass and is hit pretty good by Rod Sweeting. Jay Richardson sniffs out a screen pass to Cadet and stops it for minimal gain. Will Herring whiffed on a tackle intended for Cadet which turned into a positive gain. Nice diving catch by Morgan to close out the day’s practice.
That’s a wrap my friends for day five of training camp, I think this one was pretty even between the offense and defense. KTDL and I will return to camp tomorrow and try our best to keep you updated. With the heat bearing down my mind tends to wander so if I made a mistake it was because my neck is on fire and my mind is fried so just bare with me and my tomato head and we will see you tomorrow, and as always WHODAT!!
